The 1-2 Houston Cougars of coach John Jenkins welcomed the 11th ranked, 4-0 Baylor Bears with coach Grant Teaff for their 2nd Belt shot. Baylor's QB J.J. Joe threw for 2 touchdowns while rushing for another & the defense held Houston to 10 yards rushing as well as forced 7 turnovers as the Bears retained The Belt with a 38-21 victory over the Cougars. Baylor scored the only points of the 1st quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by RB Lee Miles. Houston tied the game at 7-7 when RB Ostell Miles scored on a 2-yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter. Bears’ RB John Henry got the lead back when he scored on a 1-yard touchdown run but the Cougars tied it again when QB David Klingler connected with All-SWC WR Marcus Grant on a 3-yard touchdown pass. Baylor's PK Jeff Ireland put the Bears ahead 17-14 at the half when he hit a 27-yard field goal. In the 3rd quarter, Joe scored on a 9-yard touchdown run giving the Bears a 24-14 lead. Klingler & Grant connected on another 3-yard touchdown pass as the Cougars got within 3 points at 24-21 but that was as close as they would get. Baylor's All-SWC RB David Mims scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Joe for a 31-21 lead heading into the 4th quarter. The only points of the 4th quarter came on a 77-yard touchdown pass from Joe to All-SWC WR Melvin Bonner. Joe finished with 262 yards passing with the 2 touchdowns while Bonner added 9 catches for 169 yards with his score. Klingler threw for 460 yards completing 35 of 57 pass attempts with 2 touchdowns but 3 interceptions as well as 2 fumbles while Grant had 7 catches for 138 yards with 2 touchdowns in the loss. Baylor finished the season 8-4 while the Cougars finished 4-7. Houston would play for The Belt again in 8 weeks.
