The 23rd ranked, 1-0 Baylor Bears & coach Grant Teaff traveled to Boulder to meet the 12th ranked 1-0 Colorado Buffaloes of coach Bill McCartney.  Baylor's QB J.J. Joe threw for 233 with a touchdown & PK Jeff Ireland hit 3 field goals as the Bears posted a 16-14 upset to claim The Belt for the first time.  The teams trade turnovers in the 1st quarter with Joe throwing an interception on the opening Bears' drive.  The Buffaloes drove to the Baylor goal line before a fumble was recovered by Bears' LB Curtis Hafford keeping Colorado out of the end zone in a scoreless 1st quarter.  Colorado scored first when QB Darian Hagan hit WR Sean Brown on a 26-yard touchdown pass in the 2nd quarter.  Ireland connected on a 41-yard field goal but the Bears still trailed Colorado 7-3.  Just before halftime, Ireland readied for another field goal but this attempt was blocked by Buffaloes' S Greg Thomas.  The 3rd quarter belonged to the Bears as Joe found All-SWC WR Melvin Bonner open as he ran past Colorado's CB Chris Hudson for a 74-yard touchdown pass on Baylor's first play of the 2nd half.  Ireland hit a 40-yard field goal to give the Bears a 13-7 advantage heading to the 4th quarter.  The Buffaloes took the lead back when RB Kent Kahl scored on a 10-yard touchdown run that capped an 80-yard drive giving Colorado a 14-13 lead.  The Buffaloes' appeared ready to add to their lead as the drove to the Baylor 6-yard line before their drive stalled.  When Colorado's PK Jim Harper tried the short kick, Baylor's All-American DT Santana Dotson blocked the attempt.  The ball rolled back across midfield before Bears' LB Brian Hand recovered at the Buffaloes' 30-yard line giving Baylor a chance for the win with three minutes to play.  Five rushes later, Ireland’s kicked his third field goal, this one from 35 yards, with just 0:51 to play giving the Bears the lead.  Hagan's final passing attempt was intercepted by Baylor's S Frankie Smith to secure the upset win.  Baylor's All-SWC RB David Mims finished with 104 yards rushing as the Bears held the ball for 32:11 of the game.  Hagan threw for 154 yards but was intercepted twice for Colorado.  The Buffaloes finished the season 8-3-1; Big Eight Co-Champs, ranked 20th nationally while the Bears finished 8-4.  Colorado would play for The Belt again in 1997.
