First-year coach Sparky Woods brought his 2-1-1 South Carolina Gamecocks to Athens to meet the 23rd ranked, 2-0 Georgia Bulldogs of coach Ray Goff to battle for The Belt. South Carolina got 10 points off of Georgia turnovers in the 3rd quarter & held on in a steady drizzle for a 24-20 win over the Bulldogs as the Gamecocks claimed The Belt for the first time. Georgia outgained South Carolina 292-233 but 3 Bulldogs' turnovers spelled the difference. South Carolina jumped to a lead in the 1st quarter when RB Mike Dingle scored on a 5-yard touchdown run & QB Todd Ellis threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to WR George Rush giving the Gamecocks a 14-0 lead. Georgia got a 45-yard field goal from PK John Kasay but still trailed 14-3 entering the 2nd quarter. The Bulldogs took over in the 2nd quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run by RB Rodney Hampton & a 6-yard touchdown pass from QB Greg Talley to WR Sean Hummings giving the Bulldogs a 17-14 halftime lead. The Gamecocks took advantage of a fumble & interception in the 3rd quarter to set-up scores. South Carolina's PK Collin Mackie hit a 40-yard field goal & Ellis threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to WR Carl Platt as the Gamecocks took a 24-17 lead into the final quarter. Georgia managed only a 27-yard field goal from Kasay in the final quarter & South Carolina secured the upset. Talley was sacked on each of the Bulldogs final 3 plays; twice by Gamecocks' NG Tim Hugh. Ellis finished with 126 yards passing with 2 touchdowns. Talley threw for 104 yards completing 12 of 14 pass attempts with a touchdown & Hampton had 104 yards rushing with his score in the loss. The Bulldogs finished the season 6-6 while the Gamecocks finished 6-4-1. Georgia would play for The Belt again in 2009.
