Coach Dick Sheridan brought his 20th ranked, 6-1 North Carolina State Wolfpack to meet the 25th ranked, 5-1-1 South Carolina Gamecocks of coach Sparky Woods. North Carolina State broke a 4th quarter 10-10 tie when QB Shane Montgomery threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to WR Al Byrd as the Wolfpack claimed The Belt with a 20-10 victory over the Gamecocks. South Carolina had to play without QB Todd Ellis who suffered a season-ending knee injury on the Gamecocks’ first possession of the game. North Carolina State took the lead in the 1st quarter when RB Greg Manior scored on a 5-yard touchdown run. South Carolina got a 20-yard field goal from PK Collin Mackie in the 2nd quarter but still trailed 7-3 at the half. In the 3rd quarter, Wolfpack's PK Damon Hartman put North Carolina State ahead 10-3. Early in the 4th quarter, the Gamecocks tied the game at 10-10 when RB Harold Green broke loose for a 36-yard touchdown run. Byrd caught the pass from Montgomery midway through the final period & broke 3 tackles on his way to the end zone. Hartman’s 33-yard field goal provided the final margin of victory. Montgomery threw for 294 yards with a touchdown & WR Mike Kavulic had 6 catches for 109 yards. Green rushed for 115 yards with his touchdown while QB Dickie DeMasi, filling in for the injured Ellis, threw for just 65 yards completing 4 of 12 pass attempts with an interception while being sacked 5 times in the loss. The Gamecocks finished the season 6-4-1 while the Wolfpack finished 7-5. South Carolina would play for The Belt again in 1999.
