The 18th ranked, 1-0 Southern Miss Golden Eagles of coach Curley Hallman hosted the 1-0 Mississippi State Bulldogs of coach Rocky Felker.  Mississippi State's PK Joel Logan kicked a field goal with just 0:04 left as the Bulldogs claimed their first Belt reign with a 26-23 victory over the Golden Eagles.  Southern Miss scored the only points of the 1st quarter when PK Chuck Davis connected on a 22-yard field goal.  The Bulldogs took the lead in the 2nd quarter when QB Eric Underwood found WR Sam Wright on a 7-yard touchdown pass.  The Golden Eagles responded with a 1-yard touchdown run by RB Ricky Bradley for a 10-7 advantage but on the ensuing kick-off, WR Jerry Bouldin took the kick & returned it 96 yards for a touchdown giving the Bulldogs a 14-10 advantage.  Davis’ 33-yard field goal before the end of the half sent the teams to the intermission with Mississippi State leading 14-13.  The teams continued to trade score as it became clear the last team to score would win the game.  Logan hit a 37-yard field goal for a 17-13 Mississippi State lead but the Golden Eagles took a 20-17 lead when Bradley scored on a 12-yard touchdown run.  Underwood scored on a 28-yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter giving the Bulldogs a 23-17 lead after Logan missed the extra-point attempt.  Davis tied the game at 23-23 when he hit a 35-yard field goal with 2:55 left but the Bulldogs were not ready to settle for a tie.  With 1:18 to play, Mississippi State drove 46 yards in 4 plays to the Southern Miss 17-yard line.  The highlight of the drive was a 38-yard pass from Underwood to RB Kenny Roberts.  Logan kicked the 34-yard field goal for the upset win.  Underwood threw for just 77 yards as the Bulldogs were out gained 397-269 while the Golden Eagles had the ball for 35:33 of the game.  Southern Miss's QB Brett Favre finished with 182 yards passing while RB Reggie Warnsley rushed for 101 yards in the loss.  The Golden Eagles finished the season 5-6 while the Bulldogs finished 5-6.  Southern Miss has not played for The Belt again.
