First-year coach Bill Lewis brought his 3-0-1 East Carolina Pirates to Columbia to meet the 3-1-1 South Carolina Gamecocks of coach Sparky Woods. South Carolina's QB Todd Ellis threw 3 touchdowns while RB Albert Haynes rushed for 2 touchdowns in a 47-14 victory over the Pirates. East Carolina took the lead when QB Travis Hunter connected with TE Charles Freeman for a 5-yard touchdown pass. The Gamecocks responded with a 34-yard field goal from PK Collin Mackie. The Pirates pushed the lead to 14-3 when RB Michael Rhett scored on a 1-yard touchdown run before Mackie’s 48-yard field goal kept South Carolina within shouting distance at 14-6. The Gamecocks got a 15-yard touchdown pass from Ellis to WR Carl Platt but the missed 2-point conversion attempt left the score 14-12 as the 1st quarter ended. The Gamecocks took control of the game from here as they score 35 unanswered points over the final three quarters. South Carolina's RB Mike Dingle gave the Gamecocks the halftime lead when he carried in from a yard out. The 3rd quarter saw Haynes score on a 1-yard touchdown run & Ellis connect with Platt for a 22-yard touchdown pass as South Carolina took a 33-14 lead. In the 4th quarter, Ellis found WR Robert Brooks open for a 25-yard touchdown pass & Haynes score on another 1-yard run. Ellis finished with 360 yards passing with his 3 touchdowns, Dingle added 117 yards rushing to his score, & Haynes rushed for 101 yards with his 2 touchdowns. For the Gamecocks' receivers, WR Eddie Miller had 5 catches for 128 yards & Platt had 5 catches for 119 yards with his 2 touchdowns. For East Carolina, QB Jeff Blake threw for just 89 yards. South Carolina finished the season 6-4-1 while the Pirates finished 5-5-1. East Carolina has not played for The Belt again.
