The 4th ranked, 10-1 Florida State Seminoles of coach Bobby Bowden met the 7th ranked, 10-1 Auburn Tigers of coach Pat Dye. Seminoles' RB Sammie Smith rushed for 115 yards while Florida State's defense recovered 2 fumbles & intercepted Auburn's QB Reggie Slack 3 times. Seminoles' All-American CB Deion Sanders intercepted one of Slack's passes in Florida State's end zone on the final play of the game to secure a 13-7 Seminoles' win. Florida State opened the scoring by completing an 84-yard drive with RB Dayne Williams scoring on a 2-yard run. Seminoles' PK Bill Mason connected on field goals of 35 & 31 yards as Florida State took a 13-0 lead. The first field goal was set-up by an interception of Slack by Florida State's CB Stan Shiver. Auburn got on the board with a 51-yard drive as Slack hit TE Walter Reeves on a 20-yard touchdown pass. The defenses dominated the 2nd half, as neither team was able to score. Florida State’s best chance was lost when QB Chip Ferguson threw a swing pass to Smith which was ruled a lateral & the ball was recovered at the Tigers' 19-yard line by Auburn's LB Quentin Riggins. The Tigers lost their best chance when Slack was called for intentional grounding at the Seminoles' 15-yard line as Auburn tried to convert a 4th down & 9 to go. Auburn’s last chance came with 3:28 left after Florida State P Tim Corlew's punt pinned the Tigers at their own 4-yard line. Slack converted 3 fourth down plays during the drive but with the ball at the Seminoles’ 22-yard line & with just 0:05 to play, Sanders intercepted Slack’s final pass which had been intended for Auburn's WR Lawyer Tillman. One play earlier, it appeared Florida State's S Dedrick Dodge interfered with Tigers' WR Freddy Wygand at the Seminoles' 1-yard line but no penalty was called. Florida State's QB Chip Ferguson threw for 157 yards with an interception while Slack finished with 162 yards passing with a touchdown but 3 interceptions. Florida State finished the season 11-1; ranked 3rd nationally while the Tigers finished 10-2, SEC Co-Champs, & ranked 8th nationally. Auburn would play for The Belt again in 2007.
