The 7th ranked, 4-0-1 Louisiana State Tigers of coach Mike Archer traveled to Athens to meet the 16th ranked, 4-1 Georgia Bulldogs of coach Vince Dooley.  Louisiana State's PK David Browndyke kicked 4 field goals & All-SEC QB Tommy Hodson threw a 5-yard touchdown pass with 3:36 left in the game as the Tigers claimed a 26-23 victory over the Bulldogs to retain The Belt.  The teams exchanged field goals in the 1st quarter with PK Steve Crumley connecting on a 34-yard kick for the Bulldogs while Browndyke connected from 26 yards for the Tigers.  Louisiana State dominated the 2nd quarter with a 36-yard touchdown pass from QB Mickey Guidry to WR Tony Moss while Browndyke kicked field goals from 20 & 35 yards giving the Tigers a 16-3 halftime lead.  The pass to Moss was a short, 8-yard connection that saw the receiver break 3 tackles to get into the end zone following a near 30-yard run.  The Bulldogs got the only points of the 3rd quarter after Louisiana State's RB Harvey Williams was hit hard by Georgia's CB Ben Smith forcing the ball to come loose.  The fumble was recovered by Bulldogs' DT Bill Goldberg giving the Bulldogs the ball at the Tigers' 33-yard line.  Georgia's QB James Jackson threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to WR John Thomas down the left sideline but the missed extra-point attempt left the Bulldogs trailing 16-9.  Georgia nearly scored again as Jackson threw a perfect pass of 48 yards from a flea-flicker pass but Thomas dropped the ball at the Tigers' 4-yard line with no Louisiana State defender within 10 yards of him.  Early in the final quarter, the Tigers drove to the Bulldogs' 1-yard line but had to settle for Browndyke kicking a 21-yard field goal to giving the Tigers a 10-point lead at 19-9.  Georgia responded with a 74-yard touchdown pass from Jackson to WR Cassius Osborn.  The pass was a simple out pattern but when Louisiana State's defense blitzed their safety, Osborn broke one tackle & raced the final 66 yards for the score.  The Bulldogs took a 23-19 lead after Georgia's LB Vince Guthrie intercepted Hodson & returned the pick to the Tigers' 17-yard line.  Bulldogs' RB Rodney Hampton completed the 2-play drive with a 14-yard touchdown run with 6:58 left.  Tigers’ All-American WR Wendell Davis was critical in the winning drive making 2 catches for 11-yard gains to keep the drive alive.  Hodson hit TE Brian Kinchen for a 5-yard touchdown pass with 3:36 to play leaving the Bulldogs plenty of time for another score.  Georgia's hopes were dashed when Jackson's pass to Hampton hit off the running back & into the hands of Louisiana State's S Kevin Guidry at the Tigers' 23-yard line to seal the victory.  Hodson finished with 209 yards passing with a touchdown & an interception while Davis had 11 catches for 128 yards.  Jackson threw for 170 yards with 2 touchdowns & an interception in the loss.  Louisiana State finished the season 10-1-1; ranked 5th nationally while the Bulldogs finished 9-3 & ranked 13th nationally.  Georgia would play for The Belt again in 1989.
