The 6th ranked, 5-0-1 Louisiana State Tigers of coach Mike Archer hosted the 4-1 Kentucky Wildcats of coach Jerry Claiborne. Louisiana State's RB Harvey Williams scored 2 touchdowns while the Tigers' defense held the Wildcats to just three 1st half field goals in a 34-9 win over Kentucky to retain The Belt. Louisiana State opened the game with a 9-play, 69-yard drive with Williams scoring on a 12-yard touchdown run giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead. Kentucky got a 45-yard field goal from PK Joey Worley but the Wildcats trailed 7-3 starting the 2nd quarter. Early in the quarter, Louisiana State's LB Ron Sancho recovered a fumble by the Wildcats at the Kentucky 4-yard line. All-SEC QB Tommy Hodson’s 4-yard touchdown pass to WR Rogie Magee put the Tigers up 14-3. The Wildcats’ offense moved the ball well throughout the rest of the 2nd quarter but could not getting into the end zone instead settling for field goals from 29 & 41 yards by Worley making the score Louisiana State 14 Kentucky 9 at the half. The Tigers' defense stiffened & Williams scored his second touchdown in the 3rd quarter on a 2-yard run before RB Eddie Fuller broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown run putting Louisiana State ahead 28-9 entering the 4th quarter. Louisiana State's PK David Browndyke connected on field goals of 47 & 27 yards for the only points in the 4th quarter. Hodson finished with 222 yards passing with a touchdown while All-American WR Wendell Davis had 7 catches for 99 yards making him the Louisiana State career leader in receptions with 158. Kentucky's QB Glenn Fohr threw for 164 yards but 2 interceptions in the loss. Louisiana State finished the season 10-1-1; ranked 5th nationally while the Wildcats finished 5-6. Kentucky has not played for The Belt again.
