The 1987 Penn State Nittany Lions of coach Joe Paterno were ranked 11th nationally & featured many returning stars including All-American OG Steve Wisniewski.  The Bowling Green Falcons of coach Moe Ankney presented the opening opposition.  The Nittany Lions posted a 28-point 2nd quarter while the defense held the Falcons to 3 yards rushing in the game as Penn State retained The Belt with a 45-19 victory that was Paterno’s 200th career win.  The Nittany Lions took the lead in the 1st quarter when PK Eric Etze kicked a 28-yard field goal but the Falcons responded with a 5-yard touchdown pass from QB Rich Dackin to RB Jeff Davis giving Bowling Green a 7-3 lead heading into the 2nd quarter.  Penn State erupted for 4 touchdowns in the 2nd quarter.  QB Matt Knizer found WR Ray Roundtree for a 17-yard touchdown pass, RB John Greene scored on a 20-yard run, & WR Michael Timpson returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown as the Nittany Lions took a 24-7 lead.  The Falcons responded when Dackin threw to WR Reggie Thornton for a 68-yard touchdown pass but Knizer hit RB Blair Thomas on a screen pass & Thomas turned it into a 67-yard touchdown pass.  Bowling Green's PK Jason Zeller hit a 32-yard field goal to finish the 1st half scoring with Penn State leading 31-16.  In the 3rd quarter, Penn State's LB Quintus McDonald recovered a Bowling Green fumble in the end zone for a touchdown & Thomas scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring for the Nittany Lions.  Zeller added a 35-yard field goal in the 4th quarter to close the scoring for the Falcons.  Knizer finished with 165 yards passing with 2 touchdowns but also 2 interceptions in the win.  Dackin threw for 288 yards with 2 touchdowns & Thornton added 7 catches for 152 yards to his touchdown in the loss.  Penn State finished the season 8-4 while the Falcons finished 5-6.  Bowling Green would play for The Belt again in 2003.
