Earle Bruce’s Ohio State Buckeyes opened the season ranked 14th nationally with QB Mike Tomczak at the helm.  The rest of the team was experienced with All-American LB Marcus Marek as well as All-Big Ten players OG Joe Lukens, DT Jerome Foster, RB Tim Spencer, & TE John Frank.  The Baylor Bears of coach Grant Teaff stood 1-0 as they made their first appearance in a Belt game.  The Bears’ defense featured All-SWC DE Charles Benson while the offense depended on All-SWC WR Gerald McNeil.  Ohio State RB Vaughn Broadnax scored 2 touchdowns to lead a rushing attack that amassed 282 yards in a 21-14 win over the Bears to retain The Belt.  Broadnax scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to complete a 78-yard drive in the 1st quarter & on a 4-yard touchdown run to finish an 80-yard drive in the 2nd quarter as the Buckeyes took a 14-0 lead.  The second touchdown followed an interception by Ohio State CB Kelvin Bell late in the 1st quarter.  After the Buckeyes failed to complete a pass from a fake field goal attempt, Baylor QB Mike Brannan drove the Bears 66 yards in 7 plays, hitting RB Alfred Anderson on a 15-yard touchdown pass for the score but the Buckeyes still held a 14-7 halftime lead.  To open the 2nd half, Baylor LB Ervin Randle intercepted Tomczak at the Buckeyes’ 28-yard line.  The Bears drove to the Ohio State 8-yard line but a missed field goal attempt by PK Marty Jimmerson left the Bears trailing 14-7.  Three plays after the missed field goal attempt, Baylor DE Travis Selph recovered a fumble by Spencer at the Ohio State 47-yard line.  It took 11 plays but the Bears tied the game at 14-14 when RB Robert Williams scored on an 11-yard touchdown run.  Baylor was forced to punt on the next possession & Ohio State S Garcia Lane returned the kick 18 yards to the Baylor 37-yard line.  The Buckeyes drove for the touchdown in 9 plays with Tomczak sneaking in from the 1-yard line for the score with 9:52 left in the game.  The Bears last chance started when Baylor CB Grey Stogner blocked a Buckeye punt giving the Bears’ possession at the Ohio State 46-yard line with 4:34 remaining.  Ohio State LB Glen Cobb intercepted Brannan on the second play & the Buckeyes ran out the clock for the win.  Tomczak finished with 93 yards passing but 2 interceptions while throwing only 4 passes in the 2nd half.  Broadnax rushed for 101 yards with his 2 scores & Spencer added 147 yards rushing.  Brannan threw for 68 yards with a touchdown but 2 interceptions in the loss.  Ohio State finished the season 9-3; ranked 12th nationally while the Bears finished 4-6-1.  Baylor would play for The Belt again in 1991.

Muddy Waters’ 0-1 Michigan State Spartans prepared to host the 12th ranked, 1-0 Ohio State Buckeyes of coach Earle Bruce in East Lansing.  Ohio State scored 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter while holding the Spartans to just 2 yards of total offense in the quarter to retain The Belt with a 31-10 victory.  The game looked to be an upset waiting to happen through the first 3 quarters before the Buckeyes took advantage of a critical Michigan State fumble to swing the momentum of the game.  After forcing Ohio State to punt on their first possession, the Spartans drove 62 yards in 8 plays with RB Aaron Roberts scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Michigan State lead.  The Buckeyes got on the board late in the 1st quarter when PK Rich Spangler hit a 26-yard field goal.  Late in the 2nd quarter, Ohio State took advantage of a short punt by Michigan State’s P Ralf Mojsiejenko giving the Buckeyes the ball at the Spartans’ 49-yard line.  It took Ohio State 8 plays before QB Mike Tomczak found WR Gary Williams open on a 9-yard touchdown pass giving the Buckeyes a 10-7 halftime lead.  Neither team threatened in the 3rd quarter until Ohio State S Garcia Lane fumbled a punt & Michigan State RB Marcus Toney recovered at the Ohio State 21-yard line.  The Buckeyes defense stiffened & held the Spartans to a 32-yard field goal by Mojsiejenko that tied the game at 10-10 with 4:54 left in the 3rd quarter.  Early in the 4th quarter, Michigan State CB Darryl Dixon returned the turnover as he fumbled a punt & Ohio State RB Jimmy Gayle recovered at the Spartans’ 23-yard line.  Buckeye RB Vaughn Broadnax scored on a 3-yard touchdown run giving Ohio State a 17-10 lead with 10:00 left in the game.  After Michigan State was unable to convert a 4th down try, Ohio State had the ball at their own 39-yard line.  Facing 3rd & 3 from the Ohio State 46-yard line, Tomaczak hit Williams for a 42-yard gain to the Michigan State 12-yard line.  All-Big Ten RB Tim Spencer scored on a 10-yard run as the Buckeyes pushed the lead to 24-10 with 6:49 left.  Michigan State’s final hope ended when Ohio State’s All-American LB Marcus Marek intercepted Michigan State QB John Leister giving the Buckeyes the ball at the Spartans’ 38-yard line.  RB Kelvin Lindsey scored on a 6-yard touchdown run with just 0:16 left.  Tomczak finished with 116 yards passing with a touchdown while Leister threw for 99 yards with 2 interceptions as well as being sacked 3 times, twice by Ohio State’s All-Big Ten DT Jerome Foster.  Ohio State finished the season 9-3; ranked 12th nationally while the Spartans finished 2-9 in Waters final season.  Michigan State would play for The Belt again in 1988.

Coach Paul Wiggin’s Stanford Cardinal came to Columbus with a 1-1 record to meet the 13th ranked, 2-0 Ohio State Buckeyes of coach Earle Bruce.  All-American QB John Elway threw 63 times (a Stanford school-record) completing 35 for 407 yards with 2 touchdowns including an 18-yard touchdown pass to WR Emile Harry with just 0:34 to play to lead the Cardinal to a 23-20 upset of the Buckeyes.  Ohio State dominated the game defensively in the 1st half but the offense was unable to match them.  Buckeye PK Rich Spangler scored the only points for the 1st quarter on a 32-yard field goal but RB Vaughn Broadnax scored on a 1-yard touchdown run on the first play of the 2nd quarter as Ohio State pushed the lead to 10-0.  With less than a minute in the half, Buckeye All-Big Ten DT Jerome Foster intercepted a tipped pass from Elway to give the ball to Ohio State at the Stanford 26-yard line.  Spangler hit from 24 yards for a 13-0 Ohio State halftime lead.  Buckeye QB Mike Tomczak fumbled the snap on the opening play of the 3rd quarter giving the Cardinal the ball at their own 42-yard line.  The Buckeyes’ defense held Stanford to a 23-yard field goal by PK Mark Harmon.  A 24-yard field goal by Harmon & Elway connecting with RB Mike Dotterer on an 11-yard touchdown pass tied the game 13-13 as the teams headed for the 4th quarter.  With 8 ½ minutes to play, Ohio State regained the lead with some trickery.  Facing 2nd & 8 from their own 32-yard line, Tomczak threw a lateral pass to WR Gary Williams.  Williams then threw to WR Cedric Anderson for a 63-yard gain to the Stanford 5-yard line.  All-Big Ten RB Tim Spencer’s 2-yard touchdown run put the Buckeyes back in front 20-13.  Harmon’s third field goal, this one from 47 yards, kept the Cardinal in the game at 20-16 but Ohio State had the ball & looked to be driving for the winning score or at least running out the clock.  Facing 2nd & 12 from the Stanford 27-yard line with just 1:38 to play, Tomczak tried to hit Williams in the end zone but the tipped pass was intercepted by Stanford S Charles Hutchings.  Bruce took the blame for the play call that gave the ball back to the Cardinal.  Four completions later, including a 35-yarder to Harry had the ball at the Ohio State 18-yard line.  When Elway rolled to his right, Harry went to the left corner of the end zone.  Elway turned & threw back across the field to the wide-open Harry for the winning score.  All-Pac 10 RB Vincent White finished with 11 catches for 107 yards while All-Pac 10 TE Chris Dressel added 8 catches for 104 yards.  Tomczak finished with just 71 yards passing with 4 interceptions for the Buckeyes.  Ohio State finished the season 9-3; ranked 12th nationally while the Cardinal finished 5-6.  Ohio State would play for The Belt again in 1986.

Off their upset of Ohio State, the 2-1 Stanford Cardinal of coach Paul Wiggin prepared for their first-ever Belt defense.  The 0-3 Oregon State Beavers of coach Joe Avezzano provided the opposition.  Stanford All-American QB John Elway threw 5 touchdown passes as the Cardinal handled the overmatched Beavers 45-5 to retain The Belt.  Elway threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to RB Shaun Avant & a 6-yard touchdown pass to WR Mike Tolliver as Stanford led 14-0 through one quarter.  Oregon State’s only offensive points came in the 2nd quarter when PK Chris Mangold hit a 45-yard field goal.  Elway kept the offensive on-slaught going as he threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to WR Emile Henry & an 8-yard touchdown pass to Tolliver.  Sandwiched between those touchdowns, RB Mike Dotterer scored on a 5-yard touchdown run as Stanford took a 35-3 halftime lead.  The 3rd quarter was more of the same from the Cardinal as Elway threw a 51-yard scoring strike to WR Eric Mullins before PK Mark Harmon finished the Cardinal scoring with a 48-yard field goal.  The final points of the game came on a safety when Stanford snapped the ball out of the end zone.  Elway finished with 381 passing with his 5 touchdowns while Harry added 5 catches for 111 yards to his score.  Oregon State QB Jeff Seay threw for 120 yards but was intercepted 3 times, RB Bryce Oglesby rushed for 121 yards, & the Beavers fumbled 8 times losing only 1 but the offense was never able to be consistent enough for a drive.  Stanford finished the season 5-6 while the Beavers finished 1-9-1.  Oregon State would play for The Belt again in 5 weeks.

The 12th ranked, 5-0 Arizona State Sun Devils of coach Darryl Rogers welcomed the 3-1 Stanford Cardinal of coach Paul Wiggin to Tempe.  The Sun Devils featured one of their strongest defenses ever which included All-American LB Vernon Maxwell, All-American S Mike Richardson, All-Pac 10 DE Jim Jeffcoat as well as All-Pac 10 P Mike Black.  They had allowed only 3 touchdowns in their first 5 games.  Both teams scored in the final minute of the game but a 1-yard touchdown run by Arizona State RB Tex Wright that was the difference as the Sun Devils rallied for a 21-17 victory to claim The Belt.  Stanford opened the game scoring on their first drive when All-Pac 10 RB Vincent White carrying over on a 2-yard run.  The Cardinal got a 24-yard field goal on the next drive from PK Mark Harmon for a 10-0 lead.  Arizona State QB Todd Hons led 2 scoring drives with Wright scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run & Hons throwing a 31-yard touchdown pass to WR Ron Brown to give Arizona State a 14-10 halftime lead.  Neither team was able to score in the 3rd quarter & late in the 4th quarter, the Sun Devils drove to the Stanford 1-yard line for the clinching score but Stanford S Vaughn Williams recovered a fumble by Wright in the end zone giving All-American QB John Elway another chance to win the game.  Elway connected with WR Mike Tolliver from 15 yards with 0:49 to play to apparently seal a 17-14 win for the Cardinal.  The touchdown pass was the first that the Sun Devils defense had allowed in 29 quarters.  With 80 yards to go, Hons marched the Sun Devils to the Cardinal 1-yard line by completing 4 of 5 pass attempts & again handed the ball to Wright.  This time the fullback held on to score the winning touchdown with 0:11 to play.  Elway didn’t have the time to rally this time as Arizona State took home a 21-17 victory.  Hons finished with 187 yards passing with a touchdown while RB Darryl Clack added 112 yards rushing in the win.  Elway threw for 209 yards with a touchdown but the Cardinal were held to just 13 yards rushing in the loss.  Stanford finished the season 5-6 while the Sun Devils finished 10-2, ranked 6th nationally.  Stanford would play for The Belt again in 1984.

Coach John Robinson brought his 12th ranked, 5-1 Southern Cal Trojans to Tempe to face the stifling defense of the 7th ranked, 7-0 Arizona State Sun Devils with coach Darryl Rogers.  The Trojans had their usual array of All-Americans – OT Don Mosebar, OG Bruce Matthews, NG George Achica as well as All-Pac 10 players OG Tony Slaton, LB Jack Del Rio, & DB Joey Browner.  Arizona State defense proved too tough for the Trojans as they were held to 20 yards rushing in a 17-10 Sun Devil victory.  Southern Cal took a 3-0 lead when PK Steve Jordan hit a 50-yard field goal after Southern Cal S Troy West recovered a fumble by Arizona State RB Darryl Clack at the Arizona State 26-yard line.  Arizona State responded with a 29-yard touchdown pass from QB Todd Hons to Clack as the Sun Devils took a 7-3 lead.  Late in the 1st quarter, Arizona State PK Luis Zendejas connected on an Arizona State record 52-yard field goal.  The Trojans tied the game at 10-10 in the 2nd quarter when West intercepted Hons giving the ball to the Trojans at the Arizona State 20-yard line.  Southern Cal QB Sean Salisbury, who later left the game with a season-ending knee injury, found WR Jeff Simmons on a 21-yard touchdown pass & the teams went to their locker rooms with the game tied at 10-10.  The game-winning touchdown came in the 3rd quarter after Arizona State CB Mario Montgomery intercepted Salisbury & returned it to the Arizona State 46-yard line.  The Sun Devils drove the 54 yards in 4 plays with RB Alvin Moore scoring on a 6-yard touchdown run.  The Sun Devils withstood the Southern Cal attempt to rally as the stopped the Trojans at the Arizona State 8-yard line late in the game & at the Arizona State 25-yard line with 0:51 left in the game.  Hons finished with 165 yards passing with an interception.  Salisbury threw for 113 yards with a touchdown as well as an interception before leaving in the 3rd quarter with the injury & Simmons had 11 catches for 173 yards with his touchdown.  Arizona State finished the season 10-2; ranked 6th nationally while the Trojans finished 8-3, ranked 15th nationally in Robinson’s final season.  Southern Cal would play for The Belt again in 1984.

For the 2nd time this season, coach Joe Avezzano prepared his Oregon State Beavers to play for The Belt.  This time, the 0-7-1 Beavers met the 5th ranked, 8-0 Arizona State Sun Devils of coach Darryl Rogers who had just held Southern Cal to 20 yards rushing in their previous game & had only allowed 6 touchdowns in 8 games.  The Beavers put a healthy scare into the Sun Devils before Arizona State RB Darryl Clack scored on a 25-yard touchdown run with 1:09 to play to secure a much closer than expected 30-17 victory over Oregon State to retain The Belt.  Arizona State got the only points of the 1st quarter when PK Luis Zendejas connected on a school-record 55-yard field goal.  The Beavers tied the game at 3-3 early in the 2nd quarter when PK Chris Mangold converted a 22-yard field goal & took the lead when RB Bryce Oglesby scored on a 25-yard touchdown run.  The Sun Devils responded with a 10-play, 73-yard drive with QB Todd Hons scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 10-10.  On Oregon State’s next possession, QB James Burton was sacked & fumbled but Beavers’ RB James Terrell picked-up the ball & raced 62 yards for a touchdown.  The missed extra-point attempt left the score at Oregon State 16 Arizona State 10.  The Sun Devils got the lead back before halftime with a 6-play, 73-yard drive with RB Alvin Moore scoring on a 4-yard touchdown run.  The successful extra-point by Zendejas gave Arizona State a 17-16 halftime edge.  Zendejas hit field goals from 28 & 37 yards in the 3rd quarter pushing the lead to 23-16.  Oregon State continued to threaten throughout the 2nd half but could not get into the end zone & when Clack broke loose late in the 4th quarter, the Sun Devils had the win.  Hons finished with 300 yards passing but 3 interceptions while WR Ron Wetzel had 8 catches for 144 yards.  For the Beavers, QB Jeff Seay threw for 53 yards completing only 4 of 17 pass attempts while Oglesby rushed for 117 yards with his touchdown.  Arizona State finished the season 10-2; ranked 6th nationally while the Beavers finished 1-9-1.  Oregon State would play for The Belt again in 1984.

The Washington Huskies of coach Don James were ranked 7th nationally with an 8-1 record as they traveled to Tempe to meet the 3rd ranked, 9-0 Arizona State Sun Devils of coach Darryl Rogers.  The Huskies had been ranked in the top 2 all season until an upset loss to Stanford & All-American QB John Elway.  Washington converted two Arizona State fumbles into 14 points that was enough to claim The Belt with 17-13 victory in the battle of these titans.  The Huskies took the lead on the first play of the 2nd quarter when QB Tim Cowan connected with WR Aaron Williams who made a diving catch on the 20-yard touchdown pass.  The Huskies had taken possession of the ball at the Arizona State 32-yard line after recovering a fumble by Sun Devil S Scott Kegans on a Washington punt.  All-American PK Chuck Nelson gave Washington a 10-0 lead when he kicked a 24-yard field goal.  Late in the 2nd quarter, Arizona State PK Luis Zendejas hit a 39-yard field goal but the Sun Devils still trailed 10-3 at the half.  Arizona State RB Darryl Clack fumbled the 2nd half kick-off & the Huskies converted it into a 25-yard touchdown drive when All-Pac 10 RB Jacque Robinson scored on a 4-yard touchdown run making the score Washington 17 Arizona State 3.  The Sun Devils closed the gap when Clack broke loose for a 50-yard touchdown run & Zendejas’ 47-yard field goal early in the 4th quarter got the Sun Devils within 4 points but they could get no closer.  Arizona State out gained Washington 360 yards to 230 yards but 4 Sun Devil turnovers kept Arizona State from retaining The Belt.  Cowan threw for just 74 yards with a touchdown while Robinson rushed for 124 yards with his touchdown.  For the Sun Devils, QB Todd Hons threw for 206 yards with 2 interceptions.  Arizona State finished the season 10-2; ranked 6th nationally while the Huskies finished 10-2, ranked 7th nationally.  Arizona State would play for The Belt again in 1990.

The 5th ranked, 9-1 Washington Huskies with coach Don James met the 2-7-1 Washington State Cougars of Jim Walden.  This was the 2nd time the winner of this match-up claimed both The Apple Cup & The Belt; Washington had retained both in the previous game in 1980 with a 30-23 win.  The Cougars had not beaten the Huskies since 1973 & this game seemed to be no different on paper.  A win by the Huskies would send them to the Rose Bowl.  Washington State RB Tim Harris & RB James Matthews each rushed for more than 100 yards with a touchdown as the 18-point underdog Cougars upset the Huskies 24-20 to claim The Belt & The Apple Cup.  Early in the 1st quarter, Washington took a 7-0 lead when QB Tim Cowan hit WR Anthony Allen on a 24-yard touchdown pass.  All-American PK Chuck Nelson pushed the Huskies’ lead to 10-0 when he hit a 21-yard field goal early in the 2nd quarter.  Matthews’ touchdown came on a 3-yard run with 2:47 left in the half but Washington responded with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Cowan to Allen with 1:00 to play in the half leaving the score Washington 17 Washington State 7 at the intermission.  Early in the 3rd quarter, Washington State QB Clete Casper found WR Mike Peterson open for a 6-yard touchdown pass before Harris gave the Cougars the lead at 21-17 with a 7-yard touchdown run with 4:43 left in the quarter.  Nelson’s 37-yard field goal got Washington within a point but a 32-yard field goal attempt with 4:35 left in the game that would have giving the Huskies the lead was wide right.  It was Nelson first miss of the season after an NCAA record 30 consecutive field goals.  The Cougars were forced to punt on their next drive & Washington had a chance to secure a come-from-behind win.  Washington State S Rob Treece sacked Cowan who lost the ball & S Gerald Waters recovered the fumble at the Washington 28-yard line.  With 0:56 left, Washington State PK John Traut hit a 38-yard field goal for a 4-point lead.  With 0:47 to play, Washington State LB Mark Pleis intercepted Cowan & the Cougars had secured the upset.  Casper finished with just 44 yards passing with a touchdown & 2 interceptions, Harris rushed for 124 yards with his touchdown, & Matthews rushed for 110 yards with his score.  Cowan threw for 241 yards with 2 touchdowns, All-Pac 10 RB Jacque Robinson added 137 yards rushing, & Allen had 9 catches for 140 yards with his 2 touchdowns.  The win by Washington State meant that for the first time in its history, The Belt was not defended in a bowl game.  The Huskies finished the season 10-2; ranked 7th nationally while the Cougars finished 3-7-1.  Washington would play for The Belt again in 1983.
