The 12th ranked, 5-0 Arizona State Sun Devils of coach Darryl Rogers welcomed the 3-1 Stanford Cardinal of coach Paul Wiggin to Tempe.  The Sun Devils featured one of their strongest defenses ever which included All-American LB Vernon Maxwell, All-American S Mike Richardson, All-Pac 10 DE Jim Jeffcoat as well as All-Pac 10 P Mike Black.  They had allowed only 3 touchdowns in their first 5 games.  Both teams scored in the final minute of the game but a 1-yard touchdown run by Arizona State's RB Tex Wright was the difference as the Sun Devils rallied for a 21-17 victory to claim The Belt.  Stanford opened the game scoring on their first drive with All-Pac 10 RB Vincent White carrying over on a 2-yard run.  The Cardinal got a 24-yard field goal on the next drive from PK Mark Harmon for a 10-0 lead.  Arizona State's QB Todd Hons led 2 scoring drives with Wright scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run & Hons throwing a 31-yard touchdown pass to WR Ron Brown to give Arizona State a 14-10 halftime lead.  Neither team was able to score in the 3rd quarter & late in the 4th quarter, the Sun Devils drove to the Stanford 1-yard line for the clinching score but Stanford's S Vaughn Williams recovered a fumble by Wright in the end zone giving All-American QB John Elway another chance to win the game.  Elway connected with WR Mike Tolliver from 15 yards with 0:49 to play to apparently seal a 17-14 win for the Cardinal.  The touchdown pass was the first the Sun Devils defense had allowed in 29 quarters.  With 80 yards to go, Hons marched the Sun Devils to the Cardinal 1-yard line in just 38 seconds by completing 4 of 5 pass attempts & again handed the ball to Wright.  This time the fullback held on to score the winning touchdown with 0:11 to play.  Elway didn’t have the time to rally this time as Arizona State took home a 21-17 victory.  Hons finished with 187 yards passing with a touchdown while RB Darryl Clack added 112 yards rushing in the win.  Elway threw for 209 yards with a touchdown but the Cardinal were held to just 13 yards rushing in the loss.  Stanford finished the season 5-6 while the Sun Devils finished 10-2, ranked 6th nationally.  Stanford would play for The Belt again in 1984.
