Off their upset of Ohio State, the 2-1 Stanford Cardinal of coach Paul Wiggin prepared for their first-ever Belt defense. The 0-3 Oregon State Beavers of coach Joe Avezzano provided the opposition. Stanford's All-American QB John Elway threw 5 touchdown passes as the Cardinal handled the overmatched Beavers 45-5 to retain The Belt. Elway threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to RB Shaun Avant & a 6-yard touchdown pass to WR Mike Tolliver as Stanford led 14-0 through one quarter. Oregon State’s only offensive points came in the 2nd quarter when PK Chris Mangold hit a 45-yard field goal. Elway kept the offensive on-slaught going as he threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to WR Emile Harry & an 8-yard touchdown pass to Tolliver. Sandwiched between those touchdowns, RB Mike Dotterer scored on a 5-yard touchdown run as Stanford took a 35-3 halftime lead. The 3rd quarter was more of the same from the Cardinal as Elway threw a 51-yard scoring strike to WR Eric Mullins before PK Mark Harmon finished the Cardinal scoring with a 48-yard field goal. The final points of the game came on a safety when Stanford snapped the ball out of the end zone. Elway finished with 381 passing with his 5 touchdowns while Harry added 5 catches for 111 yards to his score. Oregon State's QB Jeff Seay threw for 120 yards but was intercepted 3 times, RB Bryce Oglesby rushed for 121 yards, & the Beavers fumbled 8 times losing only 1 but the offense was never able to be consistent enough for a drive. Stanford finished the season 5-6 while the Beavers finished 1-9-1. Oregon State would play for The Belt again in 5 weeks.
