First-year coach Paul Wiggin & his 6-3 Stanford Cardinal hosted the 4th ranked, 6-0-1 Southern Cal Trojans with coach John Robinson.  Southern Cal brought a 27-game unbeaten streak & 24-game Belt reign.  All-Pac 10 QB John Elway, the Pac-10 Player of the Year, All-Pac 10 RB Darrin Nelson, & All-American WR Ken Margerum led the Stanford offense but both Nelson & Margerum were injured in the 1st half limiting their contributions.  Southern Cal's All-Pac 10 RB Marcus Allen rushed for 195 yards with 2 touchdowns & the Trojans' defense led by All-American S Ronnie Lott held the Cardinal to –13 yards rushing in a 34-9 victory.  Midway through the 1st quarter, Allen scored on a 4-yard touchdown run & he scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter giving the Trojans a 12-0 lead.  Elway scrambled free to find Margerum for a 46-yard touchdown pass with 6:32 left in the half as the Cardinal closed to within 6 points at 12-6.  Southern Cal's QB Gordon Adams scored on a 1-yard touchdown run as the Trojans pushed the lead to 18-6 but Stanford got a 48-yard field goal from PK Ken Naber with 0:04 in the half & the Cardinal trailed 18-9 at the half.  In what turned out to be the most critical play of the game, Stanford's RB Vincent White rushed for 6 yards on a 3rd & 1 play but before he could be tackled, Lott stripped the ball free.  Lott ran 45 yards for a touchdown giving Southern Cal a 24-9 lead which the Cardinal could not recover from.  Southern Cal's PK Eric Hipp connected on a 37-yard field goal & Southern Cal's RB Bob McClanahan added a 21-yard touchdown run late in the game.  Adams finished with 182 yards passing while Elway threw for 260 yards with his touchdown but was sacked 8 times.  Southern Cal finished the season 8-2-1; ranked 11th nationally while the Cardinal finished 6-5.  Stanford would play for The Belt again in 1982.
