The 5th ranked, 2-0, Southern Cal Trojans of coach John Robinson traveled to Minneapolis to battle the 1-1 Minnesota Golden Gophers of coach Joe Salem. Southern Cal's All-Pac 10 RB Marcus Allen rushed for 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter & All-American S Ronnie Lott intercepted 3 passes as the Trojans posted a 24-7 win to retain The Belt. Lott intercepted Minnesota's QB Tim Salem to set-up the first Southern Cal score; a 26-yard touchdown pass from QB Gordon Adams to WR Kevin Williams giving the Trojans a 7-0 lead they held through halftime. In the 3rd quarter, Southern Cal's PK Eric Hipp hit a 39-yard field goal for a 10-0 heading into the 4th quarter. Midway through the final period, Minnesota closed the gap to 3 points with a 16-yard touchdown run by All-Big Ten RB Marion Barber. Allen’s first touchdown came on a 20-yard run with 3:30 left in the game & he helped secure the win with a 37-yard touchdown run with 1:02 remaining. Adams finished with 92 yards passing with a touchdown while Allen added 216 yards rushing to his 2 scores. Salem threw for just 44 yards with 3 interceptions while Barber rushed for 101 yards with his touchdown in the loss. Southern Cal finished the season 8-2-1; ranked 11th nationally while the Golden Gophers finished 5-6. Minnesota would play for The Belt again in 1981.
