The South Carolina Gamecocks of coach Jim Carlen came to Los Angeles with a 2-0 record, ranked 20th nationally & having outscored their opponents 110-0. John Robinson’s 4th ranked Southern Cal Trojans were 1-0 with a 21-game unbeaten streak & opening their home season. The Gamecocks featured Heisman Trophy winning, All-American RB George Rogers, who rushed for 141 yards but the Trojans got 107 yards rushing & 2 touchdowns from All-Pac 10 RB Marcus Allen as Southern Cal posted a 23-13 win over South Carolina to retain The Belt. Allen opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run on the Trojans first drive. South Carolina kept the game close when PK Eddie Leopard converted a 34-yard field goal attempt but the Gamecocks still trailed 7-3. A 47-yard field goal from Southern Cal's PK Eric Hipp gave the Trojans a 10-3 lead entering the 2nd quarter. With 0:05 left in the half, Leopard hit a 25-yard field goal which sent the teams to the locker rooms with Southern Cal leading 10-6. The Trojans took control of the game in the 3rd quarter as QB Gordon Adams threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to WR Kevin Williams. Moments later, Southern Cal's All-Pac 10 S Dennis Smith intercepted South Carolina's QB Garry Harper at the Gamecocks' 17-yard line setting up a 7-yard touchdown run from Allen which put Southern Cal up 23-6. South Carolina got a touchdown from Rogers on a 34-yard run but with just 1:29 left in the game, the outcome had already been decided. Adams threw for just 65 yards with a touchdown while Harper threw for 137 yards but the Trojans' pressure forced 2 interceptions which kept the Gamecocks from mounting a serious threat. In spite of Rogers 141 yards rushing, South Carolina was held to 130 yards rushing as a team. Southern Cal finished the season 8-2-1; ranked 11th nationally while the Gamecocks finished 8-4. South Carolina would play for The Belt again in 1988.
