The Victory Bell game for 1979 featured the 3rd ranked, 9-0-1 Southern Cal Trojans of coach John Robinson with an 18-game unbeaten streak against the 5-5 UCLA Bruins of Terry Donahue.  Southern Cal's Heisman Trophy winning, All-American RB Charles White scored 4 touchdowns in the 1st half as the Trojans took a 35-0 halftime lead & coasted home with a 49-14 victory over the Bruins to retain The Belt.  White scored on a 2-yard touchdown run finishing a 14-play, 78-yard drive with 2:05 left in the 1st quarter.  Southern Cal’s All-Pac 10 S Ronnie Lott intercepted UCLA's QB Tom Ramsey, making only his second start, 0:40 later before returning it 30 yards for another touchdown giving the Trojans a 14-0 lead through the 1st quarter.  The 2nd quarter was all White as he scored on runs of 1, 26, & 2 yards to effectively put the game out of reach for UCLA.  UCLA's QB Rick Bashore, playing for the first time in 3 weeks due to injury, opened the 3rd quarter with a 79-yard touchdown pass to WR Jojo Townsell.  The touchdown pass came two plays after UCLA's CB Tom Sullivan intercepted Southern Cal’s All-Pac 10 QB Paul McDonald.  The Trojans responded with a 5-yard touchdown pass from McDonald to TE Vic Rakhshani making the score Southern Cal 42 UCLA 7.  In the 4th quarter, Bashore & Townsell connected on a 5-yard touchdown pass but Southern Cal closed out the scoring with a 54-yard touchdown run by RB Michael Hayes with just 2:30 left in the game.  White finished with 194 yards rushing with his 4 scores while McDonald threw for 199 yards with a touchdown.  Ramsey completed just 3 of 13 passes for 34 yards with 2 interceptions before being replaced by Bashore who threw for 224 yards with 2 touchdowns but an interception & Townsell had 5 catches for 129 yards with 2 touchdowns in the loss.  Southern Cal finished the season 11-0-1; Pac-10 Champions & ranked 2nd nationally while the Bruins finished 5-6.  UCLA would play again for The Belt in 1981.
