The 2nd ranked, 8-1 Alabama Crimson Tide of coach Bear Bryant had one final tune-up before their annual battle with Auburn. The 3-5 Miami Hurricanes coached by Lou Saban presented the opposition. Alabama's QB Jeff Rutledge threw 2 touchdown passes to TE Rick Neal & RB Tony Nathan rushed for 2 touchdowns as the Crimson Tide rolled to a 36-0 victory over the Hurricanes. After a scoreless 1st quarter, Rutledge & Neal connected on a 5-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the 2nd quarter. Nathan's 1-yard touchdown run pushed the lead to 12-0 before PK Roger Chapman hit a 27-yard field goal giving the Crimson Tide a 15-0 halftime lead. A 7-yard touchdown pass from Rutledge to Neal accounted for the only points of the 3rd quarter. In the final quarter, Nathan scored his second touchdown, this one on a 2-yard run, & back-up QB Kevin Jones scored on a 12-yard run to complete the rout. Rutledge threw for 165 yards with 2 touchdowns while All-American TE Ozzie Newsome had 4 catches for 106 yards. Miami's QB Kenny McMillan completed just 2 of 8 passes for 15 yards with an interception the loss. Alabama finished the season 11-1; SEC Champions & ranked 2nd nationally while the Hurricanes finished 3-8. Miami would play for The Belt again in 1984.
