The 5th ranked, 3-0-1 UCLA Bruins of coach Terry Donahue welcomed the 1-3 Stanford Cardinal of coach Jack Christiansen to Los Angeles.  UCLA's defense intercepted Stanford's QB Guy Benjamin 5 times, including 2 which were returned for touchdowns, as the Bruins rallied for 28 points in the 4th quarter & claimed a 38-20 victory to retain The Belt.  The Cardinal dominated the first three quarters of the game as the defense shut down the UCLA running game & Benjamin connected on 2 touchdown passes to All-Pac 8 WR Tony Hill.  After stopping the initial UCLA drive, Stanford got a 47-yard field goal from PK Michael Michel.  The Bruins drove 54 yards on their next drive but had to settle for a 43-yard field goal from All-Pac 8 PK Frank Corral which tied the game at 3-3.  UCLA's CB Harold Hardin intercepted Benjamin to set-up 37-yard touchdown drive with All-Pac 8 RB Theotis Brown scoring from 1 yard out giving the Bruins a 10-3 advantage.  Stanford responded with a 92-yard drive with Benjamin completing all 5 of his passes including the 57-yard touchdown strike to Hill that tied the game 10-10 as the teams went to halftime.  To open the 3rd quarter, Benjamin led an 80-yard drive throwing 20 yards to Hill for the 17-10 lead.  While the Bruins failed to get a first down in the quarter, Stanford added a 39-yard field goal from Michel giving the Cardinal a 20-10 lead entering the final quarter.  It could have been worse for the Bruins but an apparent 8-yard touchdown pass from Benjamin to WR Mark Hoaglin was nullified by a holding penalty against the Cardinal.  As Stanford started a drive early in the 4th quarter, a pass intended for TE David Strong deflected to UCLA's LB Raymond Burks.  Burks took the interception 25 yards for a touchdown & the Bruins trailed just 20-17 with 13:51 to play.  UCLA's CB Michael Coulter intercepted Benjamin to set-up a 22-yard touchdown run by QB Jeff Dankworth which gave the Bruins a 24-20 lead.  Brown's second touchdown came after LB Pete Pele recovered a Benjamin fumble & put the Bruins ahead 31-20.  The final score came when UCLA's All-American LB Jerry Robinson intercepted Benjamin & returned it 78-yard for a touchdown.  Dankworth finished with 50 yards passing as well as 81 yards rushing with a touchdown while Brown added 97 yards rushing to his 2 scores.  Benjamin threw for 378 yards completing 35 of 54 passes with 2 touchdowns but 5 interceptions while Hill caught 9 passes for 166 yards.  UCLA finished the season 9-2-1; ranked 15th nationally while the Cardinal finished 6-5 in Christiansen’s final season.  Stanford would play for The Belt again in 1979.
