The 5th ranked, 2-0 UCLA Bruins of coach Terry Donahue sought revenge for a 20-20 tie in 1975 game as they met the 0-2 Air Force Falcons of coach Ben Martin.  This time, the Bruins were ready for Air Force & dominated the game as well as the scoreboard.  UCLA's RB Wendell Tyler led a rushing attack which amassed 411 yards & the Bruins defense intercepted Air Force quarterbacks three times as UCLA dispatched the Falcons 40-7 to retain The Belt.  Air Force actually led when QB Robert Shaw connected with TE Scott Jensen on an 8-yard touchdown pass late in the 1st quarter but the rest of the game belonged to the Bruins.  Early in the 2nd quarter, UCLA's QB Jeff Dankworth scored on a 1-yard touchdown run but the missed extra-point attempt left the Bruins trailing 7-6.  Midway through the quarter, UCLA took the lead for good when All-Pac 8 RB Theotis Brown scored on a 2-yard touchdown run giving the Bruins a 13-7 lead they held at halftime.  In the 3rd quarter, the Bruins got a 3-yard touchdown run from RB Jim Brown & a 6-yard touchdown run from Tyler giving UCLA a 27-7 advantage.  The 4th quarter saw two more UCLA touchdowns as QB Steve Bukich hit WR Severn Reece for a 33-yard touchdown pass & RB Kenny Lee scored on a 4-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring.  Dankworth finished with 51 yards passing as well as 80 yards rushing with a touchdown & Tyler rushed for 156 yards with his touchdown.  For the Falcons, Shaw threw for just 42 yards with a touchdown but 2 interceptions.  UCLA finished the season 9-2-1; ranked 15th nationally while the Falcons finished 4-7.  Air Force would play again for The Belt in 1995.
