Coach John Jardine’s 2-3 Wisconsin Badgers came to Columbus to meet the top-ranked, 5-0 Ohio State Buckeyes of coach Woody Hayes. Wisconsin had not defeated Ohio State since 1959 (15 games) & this powerful Buckeyes' team would not let that streak end. The Buckeyes’ offense rushed for 373 yards with 7 touchdowns while the defense posted their 2nd straight shutout & recovered five Badger fumbles as Ohio State crushed Wisconsin 56-0 in the largest rout to date in a Belt game. The Buckeyes drove 92 yards in 13 plays on their first drive with RB Pete Johnson scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run for the only points of the 1st quarter. Johnson scored again on a 5-yard touchdown run before All-American CB Tim Fox returned a Badgers' punt 75 yards for another touchdown. A 7-yard touchdown run by QB Cornelius Greene finished the 1st half scoring for Ohio State. Heisman Trophy winning, All-American RB Archie Griffin scored on a 10-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the 3rd quarter before Hayes pulled his starting team. RB Lou Willott scored on a 7-yard touchdown run as the Buckeyes took a 42-0 lead into the 4th quarter. RB Jeff Logan’s 16-yard touchdown run & QB Rod Gerald’s 1-yard touchdown run finished the scoring for Ohio State. Griffin finished with 107 yards rushing with his touchdown. Wisconsin's QB Mike Carroll threw for just 78 yards in the loss. Ohio State finished the season 11-1; Big Ten Champions & ranked 4th nationally while the Badgers finished 4-6-1. Wisconsin would play for The Belt again in 1981.
