The top-ranked, 11-0 Ohio State Buckeyes of coach Woody Hayes had defeated the 11th ranked 8-2-1 UCLA Bruins earlier in the season 41-20 to claim The Belt.  Dick Vermeil could have been the first coach to lose 2 Belt games in a single season if his 15-point underdog Bruins fell again.  UCLA's All-American QB John Sciarra threw 2 touchdown passes to WR Wally Henry & RB Wendell Tyler had a 54-yard touchdown run as the Bruins dominated the second half of a 23-10 win to re-claim The Belt.  The Buckeyes dominated the first half allowing UCLA only 48 total yards but Ohio State’s powerful offense managed only a 42-yard field goal from PK Tom Kleban midway through the 1st quarter to lead 3-0 at intermission.  The Bruins opened the 3rd quarter by driving for a 33-yard field goal from PK Brett White to tie the game 3-3.  The defensive adjustments UCLA made at the halftime had the desired effect as the Buckeyes were forced to punt & Sciarra drove the Bruins 61 yards in 6 plays finding Henry for the 16-yard touchdown pass.  Late in the 3rd quarter, Henry beat Ohio State's S Craig Cassady & Sciarra threw a perfect pass for the 67-yard touchdown giving UCLA a 16-3 lead.  The Buckeyes responded with a 12-play, 65-yard drive with RB Pete Johnson finishing with a 3-yard touchdown run.  Two more times in the 4th quarter, Ohio State drove into Bruins' territory but Buckeyes' All-Big Ten QB Cornelius Greene was intercepted by UCLA's CB Barney Person first & then by S Pat Schmidt to end the threats.  Tyler broke loose for his 54-yard touchdown run with just 3:42 to play for a 23-10 advantage.  The Ohio State offense that had dominated with a rushing attack all season was unable to find the passing attack needed for a comeback & UCLA had the victory in hand.  Sciarra finished with 212 yards passing with his 2 touchdowns, Henry added 5 catches for 113 yards to his 2 scores, & Tyler finished with 172 yards rushing with his score.  Ohio State's Heisman Trophy winning, All-American RB Archie Griffin broke a bone in his hand on the 3rd play of the game but finished with 93 yards rushing for the Buckeyes while Greene threw for 90 yards with 2 interceptions.  The Buckeyes finished the season 11-1; Big Ten Champions, ranked 4th nationally while the Bruins finished 9-2-1, Pac-8 Co-Champs & ranked 5th nationally.  Ohio State would play for The Belt again in 1976.
