The 14th ranked, 1-0 Maryland Terrapins of coach Jerry Claiborne opened the season with a win over Villanova but Bill Battle’s 20th ranked Tennessee Volunteers had not played a game yet.  For the only time in Belt history, an immediate rematch occurred for the championship as the teams had met in the Liberty Bowl to close the previous year.  Unfortunately for the Terrapins, All-American DT Randy White had graduated, the Maryland offense was still unable to counter the Tennessee defense, & Volunteers’ RB Stanley Morgan scored 3 touchdowns as the Volunteers won the rematch 26-8 to retain The Belt.  After exchanging punts, Tennessee got the first break of the game when Maryland's QB Mark Manges fumbled & Tennessee's All-SEC LB Andy Spiva recovered for the Volunteers at the Maryland 14-yard line.  Two plays later, RB Mike Gayles gave Tennessee a 7-0 lead with a 13-yard touchdown run.  The Terrapins first break came when Maryland's All-ACC DT Joe Campbell tackled Tennessee's P Craig Colquitt in the end zone for a safety.  Following another Maryland fumble, Morgan scored on the last play of the 1st quarter with a 50-yard touchdown run.  The missed extra-point attempt on a bad snap left Tennessee in front 13-2 entering the 2nd quarter.  Late in the quarter, Morgan took a punt & returned it 70 yards for his second touchdown.  The missed 2-point conversion attempt kept Tennessee ahead 19-2 at halftime.  Things did not get any better for Maryland in the 3rd quarter as RB Tim Wilson fumbled on the third play of the half & Tennessee's DE Ron McCartney recovered the ball at the Maryland 21-yard line.  Morgan finished the 4-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown run giving the Volunteers a 26-2 lead.  The Volunteers defense stopped the Maryland offense on their next two possessions by holding firm on 4th down conversion attempts.  The Terrapins only touchdown of the game came on a 3-yard touchdown pass from back-up QB Larry Dick, playing after Manges had separated his shoulder, to WR Kim Hoover.  Tennessee's QB Gary Roach threw for 67 yards while Morgan added 93 yards rushing to his 3 scores & the Volunteers' defense forced 5 turnovers as well as holding the Terrapins' offense to just two 1st downs in the opening half.  For Maryland, Manges threw for 43 yards with an interception while Dick threw for 164 yards with a touchdown.  Tennessee finished the season 7-5 while the Terrapins finished 9-2-1, ACC Champions & ranked 13th nationally.  Maryland would play for The Belt again in 1983.
