The Oregon Ducks, led by coach Dick Enright, came to Los Angeles with a 1-4 record to battle the powerful 6th ranked Southern Cal Trojans who stood 4-0-1 coached by John McKay. Southern Cal's QB Pat Haden threw for 2 touchdowns while rushing for another as the Trojans retained The Belt with a 31-10 victory over the Ducks. Southern Cal took the lead late in the 1st quarter when Haden finished an 8-play, 80-yard drive throwing to WR J.K. McKay for the 35-yard touchdown pass. On the next snap from scrimmage, Southern Cal's CB Danny Reece intercepted Oregon's QB Herb Singleton & returned it 30 yards for another Trojans' touchdown. Southern Cal's PK Chris Limahelu kicked an 18-yard field goal with 0:39 left in the half giving the Trojans a 17-0 lead but Oregon's WR Jim Anderson returned the kickoff 41 yards to the Southern Cal 40-yard line. The Ducks took 5 plays to get into the end zone with Singleton scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run with 0:02 left in the half leaving the score 17-7. Southern Cal opened the 3rd quarter with a 15-play, 64-yard drive with Haden carrying the final yard for a 24-7 advantage. The Ducks got a 21-yard field goal from PK Bob Palm early in the 4th quarter & the Trojans missed a field goal giving Oregon a chance for a comeback. After Singleton completed a pass to WR Greg Lindsey for a 29-yard gain, Lindsey fumbled the ball & Southern Cal's All-American LB Richard Wood recovered at the Southern Cal 45-yard line. On the next play, Haden connected with All-American WR Lynn Swann for a 55-yard touchdown pass for the final points in the 31-10 win. Haden finished with 258 yards passing with his 2 scores while Swann added 5 catches for 122 yards to his touchdown. Singleton threw for 276 yards but 2 interceptions in the loss while All-Pac 8 TE Russ Francis had 5 catches for 94 yards. Southern Cal finished the season 9-2-1; Pac-8 Champions & ranked 8th nationally while Oregon end the Dick Enright era with a 2-9 record for the season. Oregon would play again for The Belt in 1977.
