Coach John McKay’s defending National Champion
Southern Cal Trojans were top-ranked as they welcomed coach Frank Broyles’
youthful Arkansas Razorbacks. Carrying a 17-game unbeaten streak,
Southern Cal
looked to maintain their grasp on The Belt. With Trojans' QB Pat Haden rushing
for a touchdown, All-Pac 10 RB Anthony Davis rushing for a touchdown &
Southern Cal’s defense controlling the Razorbacks’ ground game the Trojans
retained The Belt with a 17-0 victory. Late in the 2nd
quarter, Southern Cal's CB Danny Reece intercepted Arkansas' QB Mike Kirkland. The
Trojans drove 79 yards with Davis scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run for
a 7-0 Southern Cal halftime lead. As the teams continued to trade turnovers &
punts, neither was able to score in the 3rd quarter. The one
bright spot in the quarter was an apparent 73-yard touchdown pass from
Haden to All-American WR Lynn Swann that was called back by an illegal
procedure penalty. The Trojans got a 22-yard field goal from PK Chris
Limahelu & a 15-yard touchdown run by Haden in the 4th
quarter to secure the victory. Haden finished with 143 yards passing
but the Trojans were penalized 10 times & that probably kept the game
from being a rout. For Arkansas, All-SWC RB Dickey Morton was held to
73 yards rushing. Southern Cal finished the season 9-2-1; Pac-8 Champions &
ranked 8th nationally while Arkansas finished the season
5-5-1. Arkansas would play for The Belt again in 1991.
