This intersectional match-up featured the 8th ranked Michigan Wolverines of coach Bo Schembechler at 2-0 & the 18th ranked Tulane Green Wave also 2-0 having defeated both Boston College & Georgia.  Coach Bennie Ellender brought his Tulane team with one of the stingiest defenses in school history to The Big House but they were unable to handle the powerful Wolverines.  Michigan's RB Ed Shuttlesworth rushed for 151 yards with 3 touchdowns to lead the offense & RB Gil Chapman returned a punt 49 yards for another score as the Wolverines extended their title reign with a 41-7 victory.  Tulane was held to just 56 yards rushing by the Wolverines’ defense while a 21-point 1st quarter was all the offense needed.  Shuttlesworth finished a 6-play, 51-yard touchdown drive with a 21-yard run for the Wolverines' first touchdown.  Michigan's All-American S Randy Logan intercepted a pass from Tulane's QB Mike Walker 0:41 later & returned it 32 yards for another Michigan touchdown.  Chapman’s punt return finished the 1st quarter scoring & Tulane never threatened so Michigan had a 21-0 halftime lead.  Shuttlesworth scored on a 3-yard run in the 3rd quarter as the Wolverines pushed the lead to 27-0 before the Green Wave finally got on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run from QB Steve Foley.  Shuttlesworth’s 4-yard touchdown run was followed by RB Bob Thornbladh’s 1-yard touchdown run to finish the rout.  Michigan's QB Dennis Franklin threw for just 16 yards but rushed for 30 while running the option attack.  Foley threw for 104 yards to go with his rushing touchdown in the loss.  Michigan finished the season 10-1; Big Ten Co-Champs & ranked 6th nationally while the Green Wave finished 6-5.  Tulane would play for The Belt again in 1988.
