Coach John Pont’s Indiana Hoosiers had a shot at The Belt but the 4th ranked, 7-0 Michigan Wolverines had not lost to the Hoosiers since 1967. Indiana came into the game with a 4-3 record but on a 2-game losing streak while the Wolverines’ defense led by All-American LB Randy Logan had not allowed more than 9 points in any game with an average of 4.3 points per game. Indiana had allowed 67 points in the last 2 games; this did not bode well. Michigan's QB Dennis Franklin rushed for 2 touchdowns & Indiana lost 6 fumbles as the Wolverines retained The Belt with a 21-7 victory. Neither team handled the ball well on the blustery day with temperatures in the 40s & winds of 12-15 m.p.h as they combined for 13 fumbles with 9 of them resulting in turnovers & 4 missed field goals, 3 of those by Michigan's PK Mike Lantry. Both teams were shutout in the 1st quarter but when Michigan's All-Big Ten DT Fred Grambau recovered a fumble by Indiana's QB Rod Harris at the Hoosiers’ 13-yard line in the 2nd quarter, it took the Wolverines only two plays to get in the end zone with Franklin carrying the final 9 yards for the score. Indiana tied the game at 7-7 early in the 4th quarter when Franklin fumbled at the Michigan 14-yard line & Hoosiers’ RB Dennis Cremeens scored on an 11-yard run two plays later. Indiana’s next possession resulted in another fumble that was recovered by Michigan's All-Big Ten CB Dave Brown at the Indiana 23-yard line. Three plays later, Franklin score his second touchdown, this one coming on a 12-yard run as the Wolverines took a 14-7 lead with 9:35 left to play. After Indiana had trouble trying to punt, Michigan's RB Chuck Heater scored the final points of the game when he carried in from 10 yards. Franklin finished with just 27 yards passing completing just 2 of 14 attempts but his 85 yards rushing with 2 touchdowns were the difference in the game. Harris threw for 96 yards in the loss. Michigan finished the season 10-1; Big Ten Co-Champs & ranked 6th nationally while the Hoosiers finished 5-6 in Pont’s final season. Indiana would play for The Belt again in 1975.
